Imagine offering your customers the convenient option of paying with M-Pesa on your Shopify store. It's like adding another checkout lane, but way faster and more popular. M-Pesa is a widely used payment method in Kenya, so accepting M-Pesa will increase your conversion rates and revenue. Let's walk you through how to set this up so you can enjoy more sales and happier customers.

Why Integrate M-Pesa with Shopify?

M-Pesa is huge in Kenya! Almost everyone uses it to pay for everything from groceries to bus fare. Adding M-Pesa as a payment option on your Shopify store through Pesapal opens your online shop to millions of potential customers. Moreover, offering M-Pesa makes your store look credible and accessible.

Step 1: Set Up Your Pesapal Business Account

So, how do you start to accept M-Pesa payments on your Shopify? First, you'll need a Pesapal business account; if you still need to create one, go to https://www.pesapal.com/business/online to sign up. This account will also give you the API credentials codes you need for the Shopify M-Pesa integration to happen.

Step 2: Retrieve Your Consumer Key and Secret

Once you sign up for your Pesapal business account, you'll receive an email with a consumer key and secret key. These codes are crucial for linking M-Pesa payments on your Shopify store with Pesapal.

Don't worry if you can't find the email! Just log in to your Pesapal account and look for a section called "API Credentials." There, you can ask for the email to be sent again. We want to make sure you have everything you need to get started!

Step 3: Install the Pesapal Payments App on Shopify

Now, with your consumer key and secret, it is time to connect Pesapal with your Shopify store. Here’s how:

  1. Login to Shopify: Log into your Shopify account. If you have multiple stores, select the one where you’d like to install the Pesapal app.
  2. Install the App: Go to apps.shopify.com/pesapal-payments, Click the "Install" button to begin the installation process. You’ll be redirected to the Pesapal dashboard.
  3. Enter Your API Credentials: Copy and paste the Consumer Key and Secret from the email into the appropriate fields in the Pesapal dashboard.
  4. Save: Click the "Save"  to complete the installation.

Step 4: Setting up Payment Options

Once you've downloaded the Pesapal app, you can choose which payment methods you want to offer on your Shopify store. M-Pesa is a must-have, but you can add other options like card payments.

Important Tip: Turn off "Test Mode" when you're ready to take actual payments. After making your selections, click the big "Activate Pesapal" button. You're almost ready to roll!

Step 5: Test Your Integration

Do a quick test run before officially opening your doors to M-Pesa payments. This can be done by purchasing your own Shopify store using M-Pesa. This is like a practice round to make sure everything's working smoothly. If your test purchase goes through without a hitch, congratulations! You're ready to accept payments from all happy M-Pesa users. If not email us [email protected] for assistance.
